About me:
Caroline Engvall is a dog trainer in the Addison County area of beautiful Vermont. Her training methods are all positive and hands-off, except for petting, of course!

A main focus of her training is on strengthening the bond between you and your dog by establishing you, the human, as a strong, calm and confident leader to whom your dog can turn when he or she is unsure or frightened.

Caroline doesn't necessarily believe that any dog is aggressive, but really, most times they are just afraid and acting out on that fear.

Dogs need our understanding and compassion, rather than an owner who reacts to our dogs' behaviors by feeling the need to control them. Dogs need to learn self-control, which takes us being patient. We can learn a lot from them!
About my pets:
Radley, my dalmatian, is now a 13 or 14 year old senior citizen. She only began to slow down at the age of 9 and is now feeling her age. She has taught me so much about respecting a dog for who she is and connecting with a dog on a level I never would have thought possible.

Ariel is a mixed breed - probably Golden Retriever and some kind of Shepherd. Ariel came into my life in my dog class, dragging my future husband behind her. She is a 10 year old who is still full of life. She swims in the river every day the temperature is over 50 degrees. We thought Ariel would have died several years ago. She was so sick and we couldn't figure out why. We finally realized that she had hypothyroidism. Two little purple pills a day and she is an entirely different dog! She also has hip dysplasia and some arthritis. She hides her pain very well, until she is tired and another dog comes near her space. Then she gets afraid of being hurt and will turn very nasty, very fast. We've learned over the years about her pain thresholds and how to manage her.

I also have a 16 year old cat, McCaslin, who was my first pet as an adult. She's a crotchety old thing with more fur than I thought could be possible. She loves me and my husband and, well, that's about it. She barely tolerates my son who adores her and venomously hates the dogs and our other cat. She has her own special part of the house that is her domain.

Joad is our other cat. Joad is a whacky, black, short-haired cat. Part siamese, so he always has something to say, even at 3:00 in the morning. He gets along with EVERYONE, even if they don't care so much for him. He takes all manner of abuse from the kids with purring or walking away. He has, I have to say, for all his quirks, sold me forever on black, short-haired male cats. I'll never have another kind.

I have to mention in memorium Phineas, our Great Dane/Shepherd/Boxer mix who passed away 2 1/2 years ago. I still miss him terribly. I raised him from a puppy and had him for a very short 8 years. He taught me about so much, mostly about how much a person can love an animal!
We also had Joad's brother, Sawyer, until he was 5 years old when he died suddenly, in his sleep of cardio myopia. He was an incredibly sweet, bulemic kitty. While we don't miss cleaning up daily piles of vomit, we do miss his cuddly-ness.
